At Sunny Days Academy, we believe children learn best through creativity, exploration, and hands-on experiences. One exciting way our young learners build early science and art skills is through color mixing activities that invite them to experiment, discover, and create.
Becoming Color Scientists
During this engaging lesson, preschool students become “color scientists” as they explore how primary colors—red, blue, and yellow—can be combined to create secondary colors like green, orange, and purple. The activity introduces early scientific thinking while also strengthening fine motor skills and encouraging artistic expression.
How the Lesson Begins
The lesson starts with an interactive video that introduces color mixing in a fun and visual way. Students then observe the teacher modeling how two colors combine to form a new color, helping children understand the concept before trying it themselves.
Hands-On Exploration
Children then move into guided and independent exploration, where they can make choices, test ideas, and talk about what they notice as they create.
- Mix paint colors using brushes and water.
- Discover what happens when primary colors combine.
- Practice controlling paintbrushes to strengthen hand and finger muscles.
- Talk about and name the new colors they create.
Building Vocabulary and Confidence
Throughout the lesson, children practice important vocabulary such as primary colors, secondary colors, and mixing. Visual charts, teacher modeling, and hands-on exploration help all learners access the content in meaningful ways.
By the end of the activity, students not only understand how new colors are created, but also gain confidence in their ability to explore, experiment, and express themselves through art.
