As a parent, I love watching a child’s face light up at a new discovery: the squish of a texture, a surprising sound, a smell they recognize from home. At Sunny Days Children’s Academy, we believe children learn best when they are actively engaged, curious, and having fun. That’s why one of our favorite activities is sensory-based learning that helps children explore the world around them using their five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch.
Exploring the World Through the Senses
In this interactive lesson, children rotate through a variety of sensory stations designed to encourage observation, communication, and creativity. Each station lets them safely experience different textures, sounds, smells, tastes, and visuals while practicing descriptive language and critical thinking skills.
For 3- and 4-year-olds, this kind of learning is a natural fit. Children this age want to touch, shake, sniff, and peek at everything, and sensory stations simply give all that curiosity a purpose.
Hands-On Sensory Stations
Some of the sensory experiences include:
- Touching soft, rough, smooth, and bumpy materials.
- Listening to different sounds and identifying what they hear.
- Smelling familiar scents and describing them with words.
- Tasting safe classroom foods and comparing flavors.
- Observing colors, shapes, and details using their sense of sight.
Building Language and Thinking Skills
As children move through each station, teachers encourage them to use descriptive words such as soft, loud, sweet, sour, bright, smooth, and rough. These conversations help children build vocabulary, strengthen communication skills, and learn how to explain what they notice. Every new word gives a child one more way to share what they’re thinking, and that’s the beginning of both scientific thinking and confident communication.
Learning Through Discovery
Sensory learning supports curiosity, focus, and problem-solving. It also gives children meaningful opportunities to ask questions, make predictions, compare experiences, and share ideas with classmates. And all that scooping, pinching, and pouring quietly strengthens the small hand muscles children will later use to hold a pencil, cut with scissors, and zip their own coats.
How Sensory Play Fits Our Preschool and Pre-K Rooms
Hands-on exploration like this is at the heart of The Creative Curriculum, the research-based program we use in our classrooms. In our Preschool 2 classroom for 3- to 4-year-olds, science discovery and sensory exploration are part of everyday learning. In our Pre-K classroom for 4- to 5-year-olds, children build on those same skills with more questions, predictions, and comparisons as they get ready for kindergarten.
At Sunny Days, hands-on activities like this help children connect classroom learning to the world around them while building confidence, independence, and a love for discovery.
Try It at Home
You don’t need special supplies to explore the senses together. A few of my favorite simple ideas:
- Mystery bag: place a few safe objects in a pillowcase and let your child guess each one by touch.
- Sound hunt: close your eyes together and name every sound you hear, from the refrigerator hum to a bird outside.
- Smell and tell: sniff a lemon, a cinnamon stick, or a bar of soap and come up with a word for each.
- Sweet or sour? taste two foods side by side and compare them (with allergies in mind, of course).
- Color I Spy: on your next walk, take turns spotting something red, something round, or something tiny.

Come See Our Classrooms in Person
Reading about a classroom is nice, but nothing beats seeing it. Tours take about 15–30 minutes, and it’s a great chance to meet our teachers, see the room your child would join, and ask anything on your mind. Schedule a tour or call (856) 320-2001, and I’ll be happy to answer your questions.
We offer part-time, half-day, and full-day schedule options, and we accept New Jersey child care subsidy. Ask us about them on your tour.
